they/them
Black, neurocreative and alchemist, I was born at home in a highrise in central Harlem. I am one of the daughters of the late midwife Nonkululeko Tyehemba.
In 2018, I initiated a volunteer-run soak circle with a gathering that took place in a brownstone in Harlem. From 2019 to present, the circle has held a series of literature-based, healing-grounded programs. From holding community check-in calls and conversations to writing cards to political prisoners to preparing care packages for families dealing with system-inflicted violence, to making soap and body creme, the soak space as a monthly social practice continues to draw parents, youth, artists and community.
I also coordinated the efforts of a group of artists in creating a twenty-eight part multilingual poem, titled A Fearless Spring. I led the translation of this poem into asante-twi, amharic, spanish, kreyól, wolof, griotLITE and french. I received my Bachelor’s in Black Studies from Amherst College and obtained my Master’s in Adolescent Special Education from the City University of New York – Hunter College.
